Saturday Snapshot- Bees

My husband has undertaken a new hobby, bee keeping.  These are pictures of the first two hives.  Our oldest has been very excited to be a part of this process.
He bought hive kits and built them.  Each of the screens he is holding has a layer of bees wax already in it for the bees to start building their honey combs on and lay the eggs.
These are the two sets of bees they picked up last weekend .
The hives are on a horse farm near out house as the idea of all those bees around kids seemed unwise.
In order to keep them calm in the mesh boxes they needed to have sugar water sprayed on them.

Hopefully I will have some running pictures to post next week.  I am running in my first half marathon Sunday morning and, as this is a big deal for me, I am hoping to get some pictures are some point.

This  is hosted by Alyce at At Home With Books.

  1. That is so cool. I've always been interested in the subject so seeing someone else doing it is very cool.

  3. I have a healthy respect for bees. As a kid, I lived on a farm and we used bees to pollinate the almond orchards. I would very carefully walk amongst them...curious, but cautious.

Thanks for sharing the story of how the hives are created.

  4. Bees, kids, and a half marathon. Great job. Doing something for yourself, like a half marathon, is such a great example for the kids. Good luck. Here's Mine

  5. Wow! Terrific hobby! Bees are in need of help from we humans! The bee populations have been dropping over the years, as pesticides and competitors deplete the hives. I'm so glad folks like you are keeping the craft of beekeeping alive and well!

  6. I've never known someone who keeps bees, though it seems to come up for characters I "know" surprisingly often. Good luck with your half-marathon!

  8. What a fabulous thing to do! My husband grew up helping his dad keep and tend hives. The fresh honey at the end of the season was always so delicious :)

  10. That looks like a great hobby! I can totally understand wanting to keep it away from the kids though. I've never seen sugar water sprayed on them, only smoke. Sugar water seems far kinder. Good luck on your run!

  11. I wish I could send your husband the bees that have taken up residence next-door. They're so thick around all my birdbaths and fountains that it makes me nervous to be on my own property!

  12. What a great hobby! A friends father used our backyard for his hives for a few years and it was neat to watch him.

Congrats and good luck with your first 1/2 marathon!!
